Woodland Walk
If you have been to Springfields before you may have noticed a large woodland
area at the far end of the park. This is an 8 acre wood called Old Quoit
Wood. It runs along beside Porth Stream and as all the land from miles around
drains down through it the wood is very wet in places. It is a myriad of
little streams and ponds with a variety of flowers and trees that thrive
in wet areas.
Old Quoit Wood is a favourite haunt for deer and signs of their presence
are everywhere. It is also home to our wild Buzzard who is so used to people
he will happily sit in a tree or on a telegraph pole watching people pass
underneath him.
A couple of summers ago we opened Old Quoit Wood to our visitors and we have built a
path and lots of bridges to allow access to this ancient woodland. It is
a haven of peace, tranquillity and wildlife. Once a day visitors can ride the ponies through the wood on our new Woodland
Trek.
Picnic Area
When we started building our Woodland Walk we had to run a path around behind
one of our lakes and much to our surprise we found a beautiful clearing underneath
an oak tree. This makes an ideal picnic area with the lake on one side and
the Porth Stream flowing by on the other.
Some days you don’t know if it is going to be sunny enough for a picnic
or cool enough to enjoy a hot lunch. You can take the guess work out of picnics
and avoid the fuss of lugging your own picnic around as our café specialises
in a wonderful variety of sandwiches and ice cold drinks that are ideal for
the perfect picnic but if it’s not quite warm enough you can choose
from a selection of freshly prepared hot dishes instead.
Pond Dipping Safari
Any budding David Bellamys out there? Well try our supervised pond dipping
safari. Now’s your chance to catch and view the natural wild life of
a Cornish pond whilst under the protection of an experienced guide. None
of the wildlife is likely to be much more than a couple of inches long but
you never know perhaps you’ll discover our own Loch Ness monster!
Not Doing Much
Springfields is a haven not just to delighted children but also a variety
of ducks, moor hens, rabbits and other animals both wild and domestic. With
plenty of seating around the park you can keep an eye on the children whilst
taking time to enjoy your day out in these beautiful child friendly surroundings.
